About The City of Kissimmee Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge…
The City of Kissimmee bicycle and pedestrian bridge structure will include a 220 foot main span bridge with approach ramps to tie into the existing trail on the west and east sides of John Young Parkway. The structure will be built over the parkway just north of its intersection at Columbia Avenue and near the Publix supermarket plaza. It will feature an arch with signage welcoming traffic into the City, with the bridge connected by two towers, each approximately 40 feet tall. The total structure will exceed 1,100 feet in length and will act as a welcoming gateway structure into the City. When constructed, the bridge will allow the continuation of the Kissimmee Trail Loop across John Young Parkway, a major arterial within the City, allowing the users to cross the parkway without exposure to the high speed traffic.
In addition, the structure includes spiral approaches which provide character and “friendlier” riding experiences than conventional switchback style ramps for users including pedestrians, cyclists and rollerbladers. During the design process an emphasis was placed on Green Design features which reduce energy dependence and environmental footprint.
